One high valley • 5 villages
Wildschönau Valley
5 villages, one valley
Set against a stunning mountain backdrop, this is a paradise for nature and people alike. The five villages of Wildschönau stretch from Niederau, Oberau, Mühltal, and Auffach up to an elevation of 1,175 meters in Thierbach. Right in the middle of it all is our 3-star Hotel Haflingerhof, situated in a quiet location with excellent access to the “Skijuwel Wildschönau-Alpbachtal” ski area and the hiking trails of Wildschönau.
The Wildschönau high valley in the Kitzbühel Alps offers a wide range of activities for families, horseback riders, and outdoor enthusiasts, both in summer and winter. Modern cable cars also invite visitors to enjoy summer activities in the Tyrolean mountains. Down in the valley, traditional festivals and Tyrolean hospitality await discovery. The Wildschönau proves that relaxation and active vacations are not mutually exclusive.
Eldorado
for active vacationers
Since Wildschönau is a high valley, the elevation differences between the valley and the mountains aren’t too great. This means there are plenty of manageable hiking destinations for nature lovers without mountaineering experience. Another reason why the Wildschönau is the perfect destination for your family vacation: Numerous well-marked hiking trails offer fun even for the youngest, and refreshing streams as well as cool forests provide variety during your hikes.
When you want to go higher, the modern cable cars come in handy. The Schatzberg here in Auffach is our local mountain and offers hiking fun for young and old right from our doorstep. The gondola takes you comfortably up to just under 1,800 meters above sea level.
Under the motto "4 Mountains – 2 Valleys – 1 Skiing Experience," the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area includes lifts at Markbachjoch (in the Wildschönau village of Niederau) as well as on our local mountain, the Schatzberg, complete with a connecting lift to the neighboring Alpbachtal. The regions Wildschönau and Alpbachtal combined offer a skiing experience that ranks among the top 10 in Tyrol. It features 114 kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes, 45 lifts, and 25 small to medium-sized ski huts. An offering that’s truly impressive.
You’ll also be delighted by the region around the Schatzberg in the summer. Treat yourself to an action-packed day at the Drachental amusement park or take to the skies at the Wildschönau paragliding school. And there’s much more waiting for you: whether biking in the summer, cross-country skiing, or ski touring in the winter... in Wildschönau, you’ll discover a valley full of adventure.
Culinary Delight
& Tradition
Our four Wildschönau brass bands host open-air concerts every day from Monday through Thursday during the summer, which are always very popular. At these festivals and many other events, Wildschönau classics like the "Brodakråpfn" are a must. It’s not just the locals who line up for these delicacies.
Speaking of delicacies: the Wildschönau Krautinger is in a category all its own. This schnapps made from turnips is distilled exclusively by local farmers and is therefore a must-try at every alpine hut.
Every Monday in the summer, the Mühltal Brass Band plays in our neighborhood. It is particularly well known for its modern take on brass music.
You can also experience Tyrolean tradition and culinary delights by visiting the demonstration cheese dairy at the Schönangeralm. Here, you can try and purchase award-winning cheeses. The 1st Tyrolean Wood Museum in Auffach showcases the diversity of wood and takes both children and adults on a journey through traditional woodworking.
Of course, pure enjoyment is also available at the many mountain huts in the Wildschönau, where you can savor homemade delicacies. This makes hiking even more fun for the kids.
